To run a business is not easy but to run it successfully for more than 1300 years is really amazing.

This is the story of Hoshi Ryokan the oldest hotel in the world according Guinness Book of World Records. ( A ryokan is an Japanese style inn). It is located in the Awazu Onsen area of Komatsu, in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.

In 717, Buddhist monk and teacher, Taicho Daishi dream t of guardian deity of Mount Hakusan . He was instructed by the deity to find an underground hot water spring with curative powers located at Awazu village.

So Taicho and his disciple , Garyo Hoshi went there. With the help of villagers they managed to locate the spring. Taicho told the sick to bathe and soon their health becomes better.

Taicho ordered his disciple, Garyo Hoshi, to build a spa on the site. Since then, the Hoshi family membershas been running the Hoshi Ryokan for 46 generations.


Zengoro Hoshi is the current patriarch of the family business. With 100 rooms, Hoshi Ryokan can accommodate up to 450 guest.

Hoshi Ryokan buildings are named after each season in Japan.

  1. Shinshun no Yakata (Early spring building).
  2. Haru no Yakata (Spring building)
  3. Natsu no Yakata (Summer building)
  4. Aki no Yakata (Autumn building).


Guest comfort is very important and they have been providing excellent customer service to their guest.

Upon your arrival, you will garbed in a "Yukata", the japanese traditional cotton kimono, which has a soothing effect.

JR Hokuriku Kaga-Onsen Station

By express train, four hours and 30 minutes from Tokyo, 2 hours and 30 minutes from Osaka, and 2 hours and 30 minutes from Nagoya.


Komatsu Airport

By plane, one hour from Tokyo; 1 hour and 30 minutes from Sapporo, 1 hour and 15 minutes from Fukuoka, and 1 hour from Sendai.


Hokuriku Expressway

Katayamazu Interchange; Komatsu Interchan

Very interesting info, thanks for sharing. Building structure of this Rayokan is same as it was built 1300 years ago or it was rebuilt?

They have existed for years, but the building structure they have rebuilt the ryokan many times I think.
